Yes, some of you know I used to practice Law. But I think it is important to let all of you know that the reason for this rant is basically the reason for me finding a new profession--the level of bad faith, lack of business judgment, and overall ethical shortfall that permeates the entire industry.
I was in a car accident 6 years ago. It still has not gone to trial. That is right, 6 FUCKING YEARS AGO!! The plaintiff wants to settle for ...are you ready for this.....$2500.00 bones. That is right. I did not forget any zeros or put the decimal in the wrong place. Two thousand, five hundred dollars.
My lawyer from my insurance company called me last week: A summary of the conversation:
lawyer: Hey....Its so and so. We go to trial on Monday!!
me: Great. Why have you not settled this? How many cases do u have that are 6 years old?
lawyer: Oh..uhh...well you know the adjuster wont give me the money to settle.....and you are my oldest case.
me: Do you think you will bill in hours more than $2500.00 in preparation of this trial?
lawyer: Yes.
me: Then why have you not settled?
lawyer: Silent
lawyer: Oh and I need you in court Monday through Wednesday at least.
me: I will NOT be there
lawyer: Oh...I was really hoping you would be there.
me: Well I will be there but it will not help our case/cause
lawyer: Why?
me: I work in finance. Have you seen the stock market? Do you think my new CEO and boss wants me wasting my time sitting in a courtoom? Not to mention at least some of my clients would like me to keep an eye on things....Would you sit in Newark NJ in court over this case knowing what you know?
lawyer: uhhhh..probably not.
me: Right. So I will not be there, unless you want me to use my computer, trade stocks, make calls to clients and make nasty looks at the plaintiff and yell, "taste it!!" when she wins and gets less than $5k?
lawyer: Uhhhh...no that would be bad. Really bad.
me: Right, so I will not be there.
lawyer: Yes, right.
Today, the lawyer calls. She tells me that my insurance company bought another insurer who is defending another defendant (they consolidated mine and another case with the same plaintiff because she does not speak English only Portuguese) and now there is a conflict of interest. So MY lawyer is getting the boot and I will be assigned a new attorney. Now I could give a flying fuck who my piece of shit lawyer is. That being said, this piece of shit case has been pushed to May now, which will move us to 6.5 years and I am willing to bet it gets pushed out again.
